Meta Compute Launch Marks a Turning Point in How Meta Builds AI
With the recent launch of Meta Compute, Meta aims to address a persistent problem it faces with AI. Much like some of the other big tech companies, it needs far more compute capacity than its current infrastructure was designed for. The goal with Meta Compute is to have an internal AI infrastructure platform that can help it expand data center capacity for AI workloads. The top priorities with the platform are power availability and long-term planning around energy and scale.
Meta has been positioning for this for a while. “We expect that developing leading AI infrastructure will be a core advantage in developing the best AI models and product experiences,” said Susan Li, Meta CFO, during an earnings call mid last year. Meta Compute puts that idea into more concrete terms. It moves the conversation away from incremental upgrades toward infrastructure that can sustain AI systems running continuously at scale.
The initiative also reflects how aggressively Meta is thinking about long-term capacity. In a post on Threads, Mark Zuckerberg described the scale of the ambition. He wrote, “Meta is planning to build tens of gigawatts this decade, and hundreds of gigawatts or more over time. How we engineer, invest, and partner to build this infrastructure will become a strategic advantage.”
These statements regarding Meta Compute make clear that Meta is treating infrastructure as a competitive lever. And planning for that started months ago. AI growth inside the company is undoubtedly critical. The foreseeable future is now tied as much to power and construction timelines as it is to model development or software innovation.

Meta Compute brings together several parts of Meta’s existing infrastructure operations that were previously managed separately. It covers data center site development and facility construction. It also includes the process of bringing new capacity online. Meta wants the platform to manage all these activities under a single program.
The initiative includes standardized facility designs and coordinated construction schedules. Shared deployment processes across multiple locations is also part of the program. This allows Meta to add AI capacity in batches. It also centralizes oversight of timelines, supplier coordination, and commissioning. This means that new data centers can be built and integrated more consistently as demand grows. Flexibility to scale when needed.
The technical backbone of Meta Compute sits with Santosh Janardhan, who already leads Meta’s global infrastructure organization. His scope under the new initiative includes data center architecture and internal software platforms. He also oversees custom silicon efforts, developer productivity tooling, and the operation of Meta’s worldwide data center and network footprint.
Long-term capacity planning is being handled by Daniel Gross, who joined Meta last year. His responsibilities include forecasting future compute demand, managing supplier partnerships, tracking infrastructure industry dynamics, and modeling how large-scale buildouts will unfold over time. The role is designed to give Meta earlier visibility into constraints around materials and timelines.
Meta’s president and vice chairman Dina Powell McCormick leads the government coordination and financing efforts. We know the government is eager to stay involved, or even have some control over how AI progresses.
McCormick’s role with Meta Compute centers on working with national and local governments to support the permitting, financing, and deployment of large infrastructure projects. That includes engagement around energy access, land use, and regulatory approvals. These responsibilities are becoming increasingly important as Meta pushes to expand data center capacity at an unprecedented scale.

In terms of what the other big tech players are doing in the market, Meta Compute places Meta more squarely in the middle of the infrastructure race. Microsoft has leaned heavily on Azure to externalize AI infrastructure. Google continues to build tightly integrated systems around its own silicon and data centers. Meta is taking a different approach. It is committing to owning and operating more of its AI infrastructure directly. Most of its peers prefer to distribute across cloud platforms or partners.
However, the choice to own and operate AI infrastructure directly carries risk. Large-scale infrastructure ties up capital for years, locking decisions around location and design far in advance. It also increases Meta’s exposure to power availability fluctuations and regulatory approvals. Meta may also have to face construction delays that don’t align with traditional software timelines.
If AI demand shifts faster than expected, or if supply constraints worsen, those commitments become harder to unwind. Meta Compute signals confidence in long-term AI growth, but it also means Meta is absorbing more of the operational and financial risk that comes with building at this scale. While the risks exist, Meta is taking a bold and ambitious route. If it is successful, it could gain the competitive leverage it is seeking.
