Google’s next version of Android, Android 17, is now entering beta. Soon, eligible devices will get the first beta update to Android 17 with stable versions, expected sometime soon. Android 17 is expected to bring lots of new features to the table, as well as improved OS security and privacy settings.
So, if you’re excited about what Google has to offer with Android 17, its release date, and features and devices that are eligible for Android 17, then you’ve come to the right place.
Android 17 Release Date
Unlike Android 16, whose first beta was released in January 2025, the first beta of Android 17 is likely to be released in February and will continue through March or even April 2026. The table version of Android 17 will be released in June during the annual Google I/O conference, with the update going live for Pixel devices after a few weeks.
Other Android OEMs will receive the update to Android 17 at a later date, towards the end of 2026 or early 2027.
Android 17 Beta 1 (Release Delayed)
Google was supposed to push out the first beta for Android 17 on the 11th of February 2026, but the OTA images and documentation for the beta did not go live. Google has not given any reason as to why the first beta for Android 17 did not go live. However, Google has stated that the first beta of Android 17 will be coming soon. Release timeframe for the first beta is still unknown.
Android 17: What Is It Called?
Google has always named its operating systems after desserts up to Android 9, i.e., Android 9 Pie. Since then, Google has added a number after the word Android to identify its operating systems. However, diving deep into the code of the operating system, every new operating system has its own dessert name, and for Android 17, it’s code-named Cinnamon Bun.
Android 17: New Features
Every Android operating system comes with new features and upgrades over existing features and designs. So let’s take a look at what you can expect from the Android 17 update.
New Material 3 Expressive Design
This new design was supposed to be rolled out with Android 16, but was made available only to Google Pixels via the Android 16 QPR1 update. The rest of the Android OEMs will be getting to see the new UI design styling via the Android 17 update. This design styling will include natural feeling and lively animations, new icon shapes, and typesetting, better blur effects that indicate depth and focus, improved quick settings layout, and updated color themes for the UI and icons. You will soon start to see these design changes across Google apps, followed by other apps throughout the year.

Live Notification Updates
Google Pixel users who are on the Android 16 QPR 2 update can already experience the Live Notifications feature. These are basically notifications that display a progress bar in your notifications for various apps and services, such as ride apps and food delivery apps. Now, this feature needs to be added by the app developers if they would like their users to be updated via progress-based live notifications.

Other Android OEMs such as Samsung, Xiaomi, and many others will add this feature to their respective Android 17 skins. These Live notifications will be displayed on the lock screen, AOD screen, status bar, as well as via a heads-up notification style. Users will have a choice to enable or disable these live notifications- but having them enabled is better, as you don’t have to keep opening the app to see the arrival status of your cab or food delivery package.
Simple Phone Call Notifications
When you receive a call on your Android 17-powered smartphone, you will get a heads-up notification with options to answer, decline, mute, or enable loudspeaker mode for your calls. You can always tap on the notification to view the full call screen UI.
Recent Screen Brings New Changes
The recent screen on Android 17 will now feature the name of the app, app icon, as well as a small drop-down menu that will have several functions depending on the app. You can choose options such as pin, split-screen screenshot, and app info. These changes will come into effect with the new Material 3 Expressive design language.
Google’s version of Samsung DeX
Yes, Google has been working on bringing the Android desktop experience to its Pixels and other Android devices. When you connect your Android smartphone running on Android 17 to an external display, you will see a familiar desktop experience, complete with a status bar and a taskbar. With Android desktop mode, you can easily run multiple apps, resize and move your open apps and windows, pin and unpin apps, drag and drop files, and also support Circle to Search.
Improved Factory Reset Protection
When a user tries to bypass the factory reset protection screen using different software and tools on Android 17, the device will automatically detect the bypass and will switch to a factory reset cycle until the original owner proves their ownership of the device. This is a great mechanism that will help reduce the number of Android phone thefts.
Intrusion Logging
With Android 17, your new smartphone will not let you know whether your device has been compromised or not. Your Android will now collect Activity Logs that will contain info such as Bluetooth Connections, Wi-Fi Connections, USB Connections, Lock Screen Info, and even App Installs. All these details are tied to your Google account, which is then stored in an encrypted manner on Google Drive.
