Google has officially kicked off the Android 17 journey by releasing the first beta for eligible Pixel devices. The stable version of Android 17 is scheduled to roll out in Q2 as the next quarterly platform release. However, enthusiasts and developers can get an early taste of the new features and improvements by enrolling in the Android 17 beta program.
If you’re new to the beta program, here’s how to join and install the first beta of Android 17. Enrolling is quite easy, but there are some important points to keep in mind.
First, make sure your device is eligible for the Android 17 update. Here’s a list of eligible devices:
- Pixel 6 and 6 Pro
- Pixel 6a
- Pixel 7 and 7 Pro
- Pixel 7a
- Pixel Tablet
- Pixel Fold
- Pixel 8 and 8 Pro
- Pixel 8a
- Pixel 9 and 9 Pro
- Pixel 9 Pro XL
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold
- Pixel 9a
- Pixel 10 and 10 Pro
- Pixel 10 Pro XL
- Pixel 10 Pro Fold
If you install the Android 17 Beta, you can’t revert to the stable build without resetting your device until the next stable release. If you’ve already enrolled in the Android 16 QPR and haven’t opted out of the beta, you don’t need to enroll in the Android 17 Beta; you’ll automatically receive the beta update.
With these points clarified, here are the official steps to enroll in the Android 17 Beta Program.
- On your Google Pixel, head over to the Android Beta website.
- Click on the Opt-In button to join the beta.
- As long as you have signed in with the same Google Account on your Google Pixel and the website, you should be able to join the beta right away.
- Now that you have opted to join the Android beta, in an hour or so you should get the Android 17 Beta OTA update that you can check in Settings.
Make sure to backup your data before installing the update.
Google has discontinued the developer preview program, which used to begin at this time of the year, and replaced it with the continuous canary channel. Android 17 is planned for a series of quarterly releases. The first release will be in Q2, followed by two other releases in Q3 and Q4.
Don’t expect a bunch of new features in this beta release as some of the Android 17 features will be available in Q3 and Q4. However, you can expect some features along with visual improvements.
