If you’ve been using Snapseed purely as a photo editor, that’s about to change. Google has officially rolled out the full Snapseed camera for iPhone in version 3.15.0, turning the app into something you can shoot with directly, not just edit in after the fact.
The Snapseed camera iPhone update soft-launched back in December, but access was limited. You could only open it through a Lock Screen widget, Control Center, or Camera Control. Now there’s a dedicated camera icon sitting right in the top-right corner of the app, making it a proper part of the experience. Tap into PRO mode and you get manual controls for ISO, shutter speed, and focus, plus a skeuomorphic dial to adjust from Auto. It’s a clean, tactile setup that feels intentional.
Real-time film filters are the fun part
The other big addition is real-time film emulation. You can shoot through filters inspired by classic film stocks like Kodak Portra 400, Fuji Superia 200, and Polaroid 600, among others. The viewfinder renders the style and strength live, though grain only gets applied after you capture the shot. There’s even a rewind button animation when you switch between films. It’s a small touch, but it fits the vibe.
Snapseed has had a bit of a comeback story lately. The app went years with barely any meaningful updates, with most people assuming Google had quietly moved on in favor of Google Photos. Snapseed is also one of the better free Photoshop alternatives out there, which makes the recent attention from Google even more welcome.
Then in June 2025, Google surprised everyone with a full 3.0 redesign, exclusively for iOS. Since then, updates have been steady. This camera feature is the latest, and arguably the most interesting one yet.
Android users are still waiting. Google confirmed the redesigned app is coming to Android, with the Snapseed team saying on Reddit that work started in November 2025, though it’s still a few months out. For now, iPhone users get to have all the fun.
