The South African Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) has partnered with Huawei to launch the Code4Mzansi Developer Competition. Announced on February 19, 2026, this initiative is designed to empower local innovators, startups, and students to create cloud-powered solutions for real-world challenges. The program is supported by several leading academic institutions, including the University of Cape Town, University of Johannesburg, University of Pretoria, and the University of the Witwatersrand.
The competition has already seen significant engagement, with 353 teams comprising 1,041 participants entering the fray. Having completed the initial online training phase, participants now have three months to develop and submit their projects. The selection process involves a preliminary screening to identify the top 20 teams, followed by online semi-finals. Ultimately, the top 10 teams will advance to a National Grand Finale to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges for a chance to win prize money totaling just under one million rand.
Key leadership figures have emphasized the strategic importance of this collaboration. Rex Lei, President of Huawei Cloud Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighted that the program provides full access to Huawei’s suite of cloud tools and APIs to help transform ideas into deployable prototypes. Meanwhile, the Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Tembisa Ndabeni, underscored the necessity of including South Africa’s youth and MSMEs in the digital era, noting that the continent’s rapidly expanding youth population represents a critical asset for future economic growth.
The competition also features high-level academic expertise, with Professor Benjamin Rosman, director of the MIND Institute at Wits University, joining the judging panel. Professor Rosman emphasized that the goal is to shift South Africa from being a consumer of technology to a global innovator. By focusing on ethical and socially impactful innovation, the Code4Mzansi initiative aims to ensure that digital opportunities are accessible to all while addressing uniquely local challenges with global potential.
