Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) recently hosted French media company Canal+ to discuss the broadcaster’s strategic plans following its acquisition of South Africa’s MultiChoice Group. The engagement focused on opportunities for Malawian consumers, local content development, and regulatory compliance as Canal+ integrates into the Malawi market. MACRA Board Chairperson, Chancy Gondwe, described the development as the start of a “new chapter” that could provide viewers with a broader range of content, while stressing the importance of adherence to local regulations.

He encouraged Canal+ to invest in Malawi’s digital ecosystem, including initiatives that enhance local capacity and improve digital services. In response, Canal+ committed to ongoing engagement with local broadcasters on content monetization, emphasizing the value of expanded exposure across Africa and other markets.
During the visit, Canal+ executives also outlined plans to promote African talent across their 40-country network, expand service accessibility, and generate job opportunities within Malawi. The company noted challenges such as piracy and regulatory non-compliance by some competitors, stressing the need for a level playing field to ensure fair competition in the Malawian broadcasting sector.
