The ThinkPhone 2023 is finally receiving the Android 16 update after a long wait. This will be the device’s last major Android update, as it was eligible for a total of three major Android upgrades. The phone originally launched with Android 13.
According to sources the stable Android 16 update for the ThinkPhone 2023 is rolling out in the US and Europe. It may already be expanding to other regions, and if not, it should become available there soon.
The journey began with the Android 16 beta for the original ThinkPhone back in January. After about two months of public testing, Motorola has finally rolled out the stable version for everyone.
The latest major Android 16 update for the ThinkPhone is rolling out with build number W1U136H.39-17. As it’s a major update, it will be over a GB in size.
While the screenshot with full release notes isn’t available yet, it’s expected to include features similar to those in the Android 16 update for other models. These features include Live updates, Desktop Window, Group notifications, New Emojis, Embedded Photo Picker, APV codec support, Predictive Back upgrades, HDR screenshots, Advanced Protection Mode, and more.
A source also reported that after installing the Android 16 update, WiFi calling has started working again, which has been broken in the Android 15 update. So you can expect issues gone on the latest update, at least most of them.
If you have an original ThinkPhone that was launched in 2023, you can install the Android 16 update via OTA update. To do this, go to Settings > System Update and follow the instructions. However, since there have been complaints from Motorola users about green lines appearing after update or other issues, it’s advisable to avoid updating your device when it’s hot.
Do make sure to take a full backup of your device, before installing the update.
