The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has secured renewed support from the World Bank to strengthen data protection and cybersecurity initiatives in Malawi.
The commitment was announced during a meeting in Blantyre, where Tim Kelly, Team Leader of the World Bank delegation, outlined plans to provide technical assistance and capacity building. The support will focus on securing critical infrastructure, enhancing legal and regulatory frameworks, strengthening data protection systems, and improving regional cybersecurity capabilities.
MACRA also highlighted ongoing efforts to establish the Data Protection Authority (DPA) and the Malawi Computer Emergency Response Team (MwCERT) as independent institutions. Both entities currently operate under the regulator, but the transition is aimed at improving governance, efficiency, and national cybersecurity readiness.
Director General Mayamiko Nkoloma welcomed the World Bank’s continued involvement, noting that the partnership will play a key role in advancing Malawi’s digital resilience. He also pointed to additional areas of collaboration, including the Connect-a-School project under the Universal Service Fund, which seeks to expand digital access in schools through the provision of computer equipment and connectivity solutions.
