Android 16 is the latest Android release, but it’s currently available on only a few devices. Apart from Google, only Xiaomi has started the stable rollout, and that too on just two models. While some brands are actively testing the update, others, like Sony, haven’t even begun yet.
If you own a Sony Xperia phone and are wondering whether it will receive the Android 16 update, here’s the list of Android 16-eligible Sony Xperia devices.
As of now, neither Sony nor any carrier has released an official list of Xperia devices eligible for Android 16. We’ll utilize the update policy and the history of updates to predict the eligible Sony Xperia phones. Now, let’s jump into the list.
Android 16 eligible Sony Xperia Devices (Expected)
- Xperia 1 VII
- Xperia 1 VI
- Xperia 10 VI
Yes, only three Xperia devices are expected to receive the Android 16 update. Since this year, Google has changed the major Android release timeline and released Android 16 a few months earlier than usual; Sony could also release Android 16 earlier than last year, maybe in October.
The Xperia 1 VII is likely to be the first Sony device to receive Android 16, followed by other eligible models. Upcoming Xperia devices will also receive the Android 16 update, unless they launch with Android 16 out of the box.
As you may know, Sony is no longer a major player in the smartphone industry as it was a decade ago. The company now focuses mainly on premium phones with powerful cameras, though its devices often fall short in other departments.
Since Sony now releases only two phones a year, its device lineup is relatively small. This should give the company an advantage in managing software updates. However, Sony has not been impressive in this department either. Despite charging a premium for its phones, the company doesn’t offer enough updates, whereas budget phones from Samsung and Google get four to five major OS updates.
With Xperia 1 VI and 10 VI, Sony has started offering three years of OS updates and four years of security updates. Earlier, Sony used to have two OS updates and three years of security updates. Once the Android 16 update becomes available for Xperia phones, we’ll keep you updated through our articles.
