Kenya is accelerating efforts to expand access to technology, digital skills, and employment opportunities through the nationwide rollout of Digital Innovation Hubs, according to Hon. William Kabogo Gitau.
Speaking after appearing before a joint sitting of the National Assembly Committee on Communication, Information and Innovation and the NG-CDF Committee—chaired by John Kiarie and Musa Sirma respectively—Kabogo said the government is making progress on the Digital Innovation Hubs Project, a key pillar of President William Ruto’s digital transformation agenda.
He noted that the initiative aims to broaden access to technology and skills development while fostering job creation for young people across the country. He also acknowledged support from Members of Parliament and outlined both progress made and challenges affecting implementation, along with measures being taken to address them.
According to him, over 300 digital hubs are currently operational, supported by more than 20,000 devices. A time-bound plan has also been introduced to ensure 101 completed hubs are fully equipped, operational, and staffed within the next two months.
In addition, 199 hubs are under construction across various constituencies, with more expected to commence soon. These facilities will be equipped and opened on a first-completed, first-equipped basis.
Kabogo emphasized that the Ministry is implementing reforms to improve coordination among agencies involved in the programme in order to speed up execution and enhance efficiency.
“The objective is for every hub to be equipped, connected, staffed, and accessible to support an inclusive digital economy,” he said, adding that each facility is intended to function as a centre for skills development and job creation.
He was accompanied at the parliamentary session by senior officials, including Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy Eng. John Tanui, Konza Technopolis CEO John Paul Okwiri, ICT Authority CEO Jessy Maruti Kiveu, and ICT Infrastructure Secretary Washington Okoth, among others.
