Facebook and WhatsApp parent company Meta recently announced that it’s rolling out a major update that’s designed to streamline the calling experience for users, whenever they’re using the service across web and desktop computers. The company writes:
Whether you’re on your phone, at your desk, or switching between the two, WhatsApp gives you a private and simple way to make calls. Today, we are bringing new features to make calling even easier, no matter where you are or what device you’re on.
That said, the update includes the ability to launch one-on-one and group calls (both voice and video) directly from WhatsApp Web, without the need to download the dedicated desktop application. Browser-based calls include screen sharing, in-call reactions, a dedicated call history tab, as well as standard end-to-end encryption with no time limits.

The update also allows users to move active group calls between mobile devices, tablets, and computers without disconnecting. For added host control, a new waiting room feature lets call creators require approval before participants can enter or join the call.
To improve overall call quality, Meta says that it’s worked on integrating “QuickHD” for high-definition video within the first few seconds of a call, alongside a new and optional noise suppression feature that’s designed to filter out background sounds in loud environments. The new features are currently rolling out globally and will be available to all users soon.
