The GSD Digital Store provides seamless access to decades of geological publications and datasets through a secure, user-friendly interface.
The Government of Zambia has officially launched the country’s first-ever Geological Survey Department (GSD) Digital Store, marking a significant milestone in its digital transformation agenda and smarter resource management efforts. The launch event was held at the Taj Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka.
Speaking at the event, Ms. Kasali Musenge, Acting National Coordinator of the Smart Zambia Institute, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to securely hosting and managing the platform locally. She emphasized that the innovation ensures Zambia’s data and knowledge remain under national stewardship, reinforcing digital sovereignty while boosting sustainability.
In his remarks, Minister of Mines and Minerals Development (MMMD), Hon. Paul C. Kabuswe, said the transition from traditional paper-based systems to a modern digital archive represents a “major step forward.” He noted that the new platform will not only streamline data storage and retrieval but also empower decision-makers with reliable geological information to manage the country’s vast natural resources more effectively.
Dr. Hapenga Kabeta, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry, highlighted that the innovation will revolutionize Zambia’s mining sector by providing efficient, secure, and accessible geological data. He added that the platform will attract investment, foster innovation, and enhance transparency in resource management.
Representing the private sector, Mr. Tuleyone Mpengula, IT and Digitalisation Lead at Kobold Metals, commended the collaborative effort between government and private partners that made the milestone possible. He underscored the importance of technology and partnerships in advancing Zambia’s national development agenda.
The GSD Digital Store provides seamless access to decades of geological publications and datasets through a secure, user-friendly interface. It integrates modern analytical tools to support advanced exploration and evidence-based decision-making, benefitting researchers, geologists, investors, and the general public.
This cutting-edge platform is expected to be a catalyst for sustainable exploration and growth, while solidifying Zambia’s position in the regional digital economy.
