Last month, Samsung started rolling out the Android 16-based One UI 8 update, which introduces some amazing features. Among these, the Adaptive lock screen clock stands out as an interesting addition. This feature dynamically adjusts the clock size based on the human and animal subjects present in the wallpaper. Recent leaks confirmed that this feature will get further upgrades in the upcoming One UI 8.5 update.
Samsung is internally testing the One UI 8.5, and some of its features have been leaked. According to these leaks, the One UI 8.5 update appears promising. It is expected to be available in public beta later this year and will be officially released alongside the Galaxy S26 series.
If you’ve tried the Adaptive lock screen clock on One UI 8 and found it cool, it’s about to get even better. It’s an alternative to the depth effect. However, its current functionality is limited to wallpapers containing people or animals, and it doesn’t work on other objects. On the other hand, the depth effect on other devices works with almost every object.
With One UI 8.5 update, the adaptive clock on Galaxy phones will now work on a wider range of objects, not just human and animals. UniverseIce has shared a short video demonstrating this change on One UI 8.5. You can even adjust the wallpaper to make the adaptive clock work if not adapted automatically. The adaptive clock animation while adjusting the location of object seems flawless.
There’s also another addition to the adaptive clock style in One UI 8.5, the color adaption. The clock adjusts its color to match the wallpaper combined with frosted glass style that looks visually appealing.
On One UI 8, I’ve noticed inconsistency in how the adaptive clock functions across different models. It’s not consistent with the wallpapers. For instance, if the adaptive clock works on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, it doesn’t guarantee that the adaptive clock will work on the same wallpaper on other Galaxy models. I hope the inconsistency is fixed in the One UI 8.5 update.
One UI 8.5 appears like a full fledged update, as per the information available. While these are just two of the many changes planned for the update. As of now the One UI 8.5 beta is available internally, but since this build was leaked, many users had the chance to install and experience it. If you’re not an advanced user, you can just wait for the public beta to enjoy the next big One UI update.
