Last year, Meta changed the WhatsApp Business Solution Terms in a way that severely limited what third-party AI chatbots are allowed to do (essentially, they were relegated to customer support). Back in 2014, someone set up a game of Pokémon in which the main character could be controlled by anyone on the internet via the streaming platform Twitch. Playing was as clunky as it sounds, but it was incredibly popular: at one point, a million people were playing the game at the same time. “It was yet another weird online social experiment that got picked up by the mainstream media: What did this mean for the future?” Will says. “Not a lot,…

A while back, Microsoft confirmed that its Lens app will be leaving app stores on February 9th, meaning that users on mobile platforms such as iOS and Android will no longer be able to download the app (via legal means, at least) for their smartphones. For those unaware, Microsoft previously confirmed that it was in the process of discontinuing the app;…

Over 160 companies in New York state have filed notices of mass layoffs since last March. None—in a group that includes Amazon, Goldman Sachs, and other employers that are adopting AI tools—attributed their workforce cuts in those filings to “technological innovation or automation.”That option was added 11 months ago to a required question on paperwork that businesses with 50 or more employees must file with the state to notify of sizable job losses. New York’s Department of Labor told WIRED that, as of the end of January, no employer had marked tech as the reason for their workforce reduction.Over the…
