A Chinese company you may have never heard of has just announced that it’s making a smartphone – or at least sourcing one from an ODM. But wait, this is no regular smartphone; it’s the world’s first AI agentic phone. And guess what, it’s being hyped before OpenAI got a chance to hype up its own rumored smartphone. The company in question is called StepFun – it was founded in 2023 by former Microsoft employees in Shanghai, and the phone they are teasing today is called the StepX Neo. StepFun is no stranger to on-device AI, but they’ve so far…
One niche that Anthropic spends more time and money on than other AI companies is called mechanistic interpretability, which means looking inside the complex math of an AI model to learn why it comes up with one particular output and not another. It’s complicated stuff; there are millions of data points that might contribute to any result, and wading through them can look more like word salad than anything useful. It’s also controversial. Describing AI models with terms borrowed from psychology and neuroscience can make their behavior seem more sophisticated than we might otherwise judge it to be. That’s why,…

Obviously, the ongoing memory crisis is to blame, pushing up component costs and making devices more expensive. However, both Samsung and Apple managed to grow their market shares – the former from 20% to 22%, and the latter from 16% to 20%. Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s market share fell from 15% to 11%, Oppo’s from 12% to 10%, and vivo’s from 9% to 8%. As you can see, Samsung still leads the pack and Apple…

Rising component prices forced Samsung to increase the prices of some of its phones in several regions. But the effects of the current market conditions reach further than that – repair costs are going up as well. In its home country of South Korea, Samsung has raised the price of repair materials for smartphones by an average of 5%, reports The Chosun. Other segments are affected as well – e.g. materials for home appliance repair now cost 9% more on average. To put this in monetary terms, the average smartphone repair job became KRW 11,000 more expensive – this converts…

We are less than two weeks away from Samsung’s next Galaxy Unpacked event on July 22, when we expect to see not just the new Galaxy foldables, but the next-generation Galaxy Watches, too. And we’ve already seen quite a few leaks in the past few weeks, so we have a good idea of what to expect from the upcoming Galaxy Watch9 and Watch Ultra2. However, while the previous reports were mostly about looks and straps, the one coming from WinFuture talks about the hardware, and judging by the hardware upgrades, they may be used to justify the sudden price hike.…
