Brian Barrett: The irony is my favorite part because I feel like venture capitalists have largely positioned themselves as immune to the effects of AI because they’re very special and surely a machine can—Zoë Schiffer: It’s art, not science.Brian Barrett: Yeah. It’s art, not science. Machines can take every job, but not us. The ladder stops just below VC for them in a way that is entertaining and fun. So I wonder how many people are actually using this now, especially because venture capitalists themselves are so skeptical of it, it seems like. Who’s the audience? Is it finding real…

MacBook Air with M5 / Image Credit: AppleApple just dropped the MacBook Air with M5, bringing a faster chip, double the storage, quicker SSD speeds, and… a higher starting price. In my M5 MacBook Air vs. M4 MacBook Air breakdown, the improvements show up in performance and storage, though the design feels very familiar.Like many hardware companies, Apple faces rising memory-chip costs. Suppliers focus on high-paying AI data centers over consumer products. But don’t let the higher price scare you. But don’t let the higher price scare you. Disney+ wants to be TikTok now, but for Disney+ content. So it’s launching Verts, “a whole new way to discover stories” in a vertically-swiping format. This is “the first phase” of bringing vertical video content to Disney+, and it’s (of course) a “dynamic feed” which is billed to help you quickly find your next favorite watch. You just need to tap the new Verts icon in the navigation bar on your phone, and you’re inside the vertical video feed and “can swipe through a stream of scenes and moments from movies and shows on Disney+”, which you can then seamlessly…
The official described this as an example of how things might work but would not confirm or deny whether it represents how AI systems are currently being used. Other outlets have reported that Anthropic’s Claude has been integrated into existing military AI systems and used in operations in Iran and Venezuela, but the official’s comments add insight into the specific role chatbots may play, particularly in accelerating the search for targets. They also shed light on the way the military is deploying two different AI technologies, each with distinct limitations. Since at least 2017, the US military has been working…
Google today revealed that it’s been working on new ways to give users better communication with the Google Maps app through AI. Dubbed “Ask Maps” and “Immersive Navigation,” the new feature use Gemini to give folks a more natural and informative approach when trying to get around. With Ask Maps, Google says that asking direct questions reduces the need to manually type and filter through several search results when trying to find out information about new places. For example, users can ask specific questions like nearby coffee shops with charging sockets, public gyms which are open in late hours, and…

Back in November, Google first brought Gemini into Maps, and today it’s expanding the AI capabilities inside Maps with Ask Maps. Like the name implies, this lets you ask anything about any place in Google Maps, and Gemini will reply inside a “conversational experience”. Gemini in Maps analyzes information from over 300…
