Google is now sending earthquake alerts to Wear OS devices even when they’re not connected to a smartphone, according to the release notes for the latest version of Google Play Services. Google first brought Android’s Earthquake Alerts System to Wear OS last year, but so far it was just basically mirroring the alert you received on your phone. Earth’s a medium-size rock with some water on top, enveloped by gases that keep everything that lives here alive. Just at the edge of that envelope begins a thin but dense layer of human-built, high-tech stuff. People started putting gear up there in 1957, and now it’s a real habit. In the last five years, the number of active satellites in space has increased from barely 3,000 to about 14,000—and climbing. You can barely scroll through Amazon without being bombarded by endless identical-looking black slabs claiming astronomical charging speeds, questionable capacities, and frankly, dubious build quality. So when CUKTECH entered the market promising a tiny 10,000mAh power bank capable of delivering up to 55W fast charging, it immediately caught my attention. That’s laptop-grade power in something not much larger than a packet of tissues. Big claims, small package — always an intriguing combination.Even more interesting is the price. At roughly £25–£30 in the UK, the CUKTECH…

Every year, poachers shoot hundreds of rhinos, fishing crews haul millions of sharks out of protected seas, and smugglers carry countless animals and plants across borders. This illegal activity is incredibly hard to disrupt, since it’s backed by sophisticated criminal networks and the perpetrators know that their chances of being caught are slim. With an annual value of $20 billion, according to Interpol, it’s the world’s fourth-most-lucrative criminal enterprise after trafficking in drugs, weapons, and people. The environmental guardians facing up to these nefarious networks—dispersed alliances of rangers, community groups, and law enforcement officers—have long been ill equipped and underfunded.Still, there…
