One of the world’s premier security organizations has canceled the results of its annual leadership election after an official lost an encryption key needed to unlock results stored in a verifiable and privacy-preserving voting system. The International Association of Cryptologic Research (IACR) said Friday that the votes were submitted and tallied using Helios, an open source voting system that uses peer-reviewed cryptography to cast and count votes in a verifiable, confidential, and privacy-preserving way. Helios encrypts each vote in a way that assures each ballot is secret. Other cryptography used by Helios allows each voter to confirm their ballot was…

Newsletter platform beehiiv recently celebrated its four-year anniversary by launching a suite of new features, including an AI website builder, plus support for podcasts and the sale of digital courses and products. Co-founder and CEO Tyler Denk (who writes a popular startup newsletter of his own) spoke to TechCrunch about why the company has been expanding, explaining that it was largely in response to customer demand, particularly since beehiiv offered very basic blog templates from the start. “All of our users were like, ‘Hey, this is great, I…

X recently began rolling out a new feature that seemingly revealed many right-wing “America First” accounts are actually based outside the United States. Except the data might not be reliable. While X’s new “About This Account” feature includes information about when a user joined and how they downloaded the app, geographic location is getting the most attention by far. Posting a gallery of MAGA accounts that are apparently based in Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Thailand, left-wing influencer Micah Erfan wrote, “This is total armageddon for the online right.” Many of the accounts raising eyebrows, like the apparently Pakistan-based @American,…

Roblox CEO Dave Baszuki joined The New York Times’ Hard Fork podcast to discuss the gaming platform’s new age verification feature — but he seemed to get frustrated at the number of questions focused on child safety. The interview began with Baszuki describing the feature, which will require all users who want to submit a face scan if they want to access Roblox’s messaging features. But by the time he was asked about a report claiming the company had prioritized growth over safety, Baszuki seemed to tire of the topic, responding, “Fun. Let’s keep going down this.” And when co-host…
