Hi, thanks as always for reading TechCrunch. We want to talk with you quickly about something important. A growing number of scammers are impersonating TechCrunch reporters and event leads and reaching out to companies, pretending to be our staff when they absolutely are not. These bad actors are using our name and reputation to try to dupe unsuspecting businesses. It drives us crazy and infuriates us on your behalf. It ebbs and flows. Judging by the increased number of emails we’re receiving, asking, “Does this person really work for you?” it appears to be happening more actively at the moment.…
Newer is better – until it isn’t. Many are not convinced that the latest OnePlus 15 is better than the phone it replaces. And that’s not the only recent case in the industry either. The OnePlus 15 can be had for £880 from Amazon UK for a 16/512GB unit. The retailer lists it as on pre-order, which is probably a mistake – OnePlus UK is already selling it. And we do recommend going for the 16/512GB unit since it is only £30 more than the 12/256GB model. More RAM and double the storage for £30 seem like a no-brainer. …
The original version of this story appeared in Quanta Magazine.Imagine a town with two widget merchants. Customers prefer cheaper widgets, so the merchants must compete to set the lowest price. Unhappy with their meager profits, they meet one night in a smoke-filled tavern to discuss a secret plan: If they raise prices together instead of competing, they can both make more money. But that kind of intentional price-fixing, called collusion, has long been illegal. The widget merchants decide not to risk it, and everyone else gets to enjoy cheap widgets. For well over a century, US law has followed this basic…
Elon Musk’s X has begun rolling out a new feature for user profiles that will display information about the account, including where it’s based, how many times the account has changed its username, the account’s original join date, and how the user downloaded the X app. The new information is meant to reduce inauthentic engagement on the platform, where bots often pretend to be humans — a problem that could get even harder to police in the age of AI. X’s plans for the feature were first announced in October, when X’s head of product Nikita Bier said the company…
Google has confirmed that hackers have stolen the Salesforce-stored data of more than 200 companies in a large-scale supply chain hack. On Thursday, Salesforce disclosed a breach of “certain customers’ Salesforce data” — without naming affected companies — that was stolen via apps published by Gainsight, which provides a customer support platform to other companies. In a statement, Austin Larsen, the principal threat analyst of Google Threat Intelligence Group, said that the company “is aware of more than 200 potentially affected Salesforce instances.” After Salesforce announced the breach, the notorious and somewhat-nebulous hacking group known as Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters, which…
Realme’s GT series has emerged as one of the best value-for-money flagships in recent years – challenging even OnePlus, which held that title for a long time. The GT 7 Pro had a good run as one of the more affordable Snapdragon 8 Elite phones out there. Now, its successor promises even more value. The Realme GT 8 Pro uses the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and that is not the only upgrade over the GT 7 Pro. The screen is sharper (6.79” 1440p+, 144Hz vs. 6.78” 1264p+, 120Hz), the battery is bigger (7,000mAh vs. 6,500mAh) and the camera…
Cybersecurity giant CrowdStrike has confirmed firing a “suspicious insider” last month who allegedly fed information about the company to a notorious hacking group. A hacking collective known as Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters published screenshots late Thursday and Friday morning in a public Telegram channel that allegedly showed insider access to CrowdStrike systems. The screenshots, which TechCrunch has seen, show dashboards containing links to company resources, including a user’s Okta dashboard used by employees for accessing internal apps. The hackers claimed in the Telegram channel to have compromised CrowdStrike through a recent breach at Gainsight, a customer relationship management company that helps…
Huawei’s Mate 80 series is set to debut on November 25 at an event in China. Huawei claims the new mode can deliver up to 14 days of use on a full charge. It’s an impressive figure, but we’ll have to wait for the phone’s launch to see how…
