Apple didn’t rename the Pro Max model to “Ultra” as some rumors suggested, but it did significantly rework the design and it upgraded a lot of the hardware too. And a lot of that is new materials. The company introduced its first stainless steel phone, the iPhone 4, way back in 2010, but switched to aluminum with the iPhone 5. These past couple of years, Cupertino experimented with titanium to try and fight the steadily increasing weight of the Pro and especially Pro Max models. The experiments are over and this year Apple is using aluminum for all models but…

The wait is over – the new iPhones went on sale this Friday. A lot of places are already running out of units, though thankfully, Amazon still has the new models in stock. We will look at some Android offers too, but we start with Apple’s new designs. The base iPhone 17 is more capable than any of its predecessors. Apple no longer locks 120Hz ProMotion behind the Pro price tag. It’s a larger 6.3” LTPO panel (up from 6.1”) with an anti-reflective coating to boot. Apple also upgraded the cameras and the battery system. Also note that the base…

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang descended on the United Kingdom this week, armed with a pledge to invest £2 billion ($2.6 billion) to supercharge the country’s AI startup ecosystem. Wayve, the U.K.-based self-driving tech startup, could be one of those to receive funds from Nvidia’s AI investment commitment, the company told TechCrunch. Wayve said it has signed a letter of intent with Nvidia to evaluate a $500 million strategic investment in the U.K. startup’s next funding round. Nvidia participated in Wayve’s $1.05 billion Series C round that closed in May 2024. A Wayve spokesperson confirmed that the $500 million tentative commitment…

It has major changes on the surface and below that too, join us as we experience them first hand. Apple iPhone 17 Pro We will talk about the design in a minute, first we have to address the materials. Apple has switched several times over the last few years and now it is back to aluminum, a material it hasn’t used on a premium iPhone in many years.…

California’s state senate recently gave final approval to a new AI safety bill, SB 53, sending it to Governor Gavin Newsom to either sign or veto. If this all sounds familiar, that’s because Newsom vetoed another AI safety bill, also written by state senator Scott Wiener, last year. But SB 53 is narrower than Wiener’s previous SB 1047, with a focus on big AI companies making more than $500 million in annual revenue. I got the chance to discuss SB 53 with my colleagues Max Zeff and Kirsten Korosec on the latest episode of TechCrunch’s flagship podcast Equity. Max believes…

Sony’s latest Xperia mid-ranger launched on Friday – the Sony Xperia 10 VII brings significant changes to the design while maintaining that Sony feel, plus it features several important hardware upgrades. The new camera “visor” design may be the most visible change, but the new display is the most important one – the 6.1” panel now has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 instead of the tall and narrow 21:9 of the Mark 6. It’s also a 120Hz panel (finally!), though we found a lot of issues with this particular implementation. Sony Xperia 10 VII The…

Google is ending its enterprise subscription to the Financial Times, and it’s not the only enterprise media subscription on the chopping block, sources say. The cuts reflect broader cost-reduction efforts at the search giant, even as the company reports strong financial performance. Google has been implementing cost reductions across 2025, including eliminating 35% of managers who oversee teams of three people or fewer, and offering voluntary exit programs across multiple divisions since January. Finance chief Anat Ashkenazi signaled late last year that the company would continue to push cost cuts “a little further,” a mandate that appears unchanged despite Alphabet…

Watch GT 6 Pro retains the titanium casing of its predecessor and comes with the new brown woven strap, which features an interesting mix of rubber and nylon. It has the same 46mm casing size as its predecessors, but its circular AMOLED touchscreen has now grown to 1.47 inches. It’s…
