Still, the coincidence between Altman’s statement and the MIT report reportedly spooked tech stock investors earlier in the week, who have already been watching AI valuations climb to extraordinary heights. Palantir trades at 280 times forward earnings. During the dot-com peak, ratios of 30 to 40 times earnings marked bubble territory. The apparent contradiction in Altman’s overall message is notable. This isn’t how you’d expect a tech executive to talk when they believe their industry faces imminent collapse. While warning about a bubble, he’s simultaneously seeking a valuation that would make OpenAI worth more than Walmart or ExxonMobil—companies with actual…
Social networking startup Bluesky has made the decision to block access to its service in the state of Mississippi, rather than comply with a new age assurance law. In a blog post published on Friday, the company explains that, as a small team, it doesn’t have the resources to make the substantial technical changes this type of law would require, and it raised concerns about the law’s broad scope and privacy implications. Mississippi’s HB 1126 requires platforms to introduce age verification for all users before they can access social networks like Bluesky. On Thursday, U.S. Supreme Court justices decided to…
A hobbyist developer building AI language models that speak Victorian-era English “just for fun” got an unexpected history lesson this week when his latest creation mentioned real protests from 1834 London—events the developer didn’t know had actually happened until he Googled them. “I was interested to see if a protest had actually occurred in 1834 London and it really did happen,” wrote Reddit user Hayk Grigorian, who is a computer science student at Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania. For the past month, Grigorian has been developing what he calls TimeCapsuleLLM, a small AI language model (like a pint-sized distant cousin to…
Pintarnya, an Indonesian employment platform that goes beyond job matching by offering financial services along with full-time and side-gig opportunities, said it has raised a $16.7 million Series A round. The funding was led by Square Peg with participation from existing investors Vertex Venture Southeast Asia & India and East Ventures. Ghirish Pokardas, Nelly Nurmalasari, and Henry Hendrawan founded Pintarnya in 2022 to tackle two of the biggest challenges Indonesians face daily: earning enough and borrowing responsibly. “Traditionally, mass workers in Indonesia find jobs offline through job fairs or word of mouth, with employers buried in paper applications and candidates…

Version 9.0 of the Google Calculator app gets some changes related to its redesign, including a big change to the numbers buttons, which are now closer to touching the sides and bottom edges of the buttons around them. In addition to the bigger numeral keys, the row on top that includes functions like square root, pi, power, and factorial now only features a small up arrow and a small down arrow. Pressing those arrows removes the functions and then brings the functions back, over and over again. New and Old UI for Google Calculator in light mode and dark mode. | Image credit-PhoneArena…
Back in October 2024, Google announced new safety tools for its Messages app. The most notable, Sensitive Content Warnings, is now widely rolling out to Android users, adding an extra layer of protection when it comes to sharing or receiving nude images. When enabled, Google Messages can detect if a photo contains nudity. If you receive one, the app will blur it by default and give you the option to delete it without viewing. Try to send an image with nudity, and you’ll get a reminder about the risks before having to confirm the send. This works even if you’re…
After opening the app, you’ll see each available year as a VHS cassette with a sticky note. Select a year, and a random video from the year will start playing on a retro TV screen and VCR Just tap the video to see it on the full screen of your device. On the screen, you will also see the date, time, and where exactly the video was shot. Along with an iOS device, you can even use AirPlay to watch the video on a big screen. Meta’s announcement of Instagram’s new “Map” feature proved to be a pretty polarizing point of discussion online, especially with regards to user privacy. That being said, while it does add a bit of convenience when using Instagram, it is thankfully optional, and users can of course choose to keep their location info private. READ: Meta smartwatch launch might finally be happening this September To get started with the Map function, users will need to open their direct messages (DMs) and tap the Map icon at the top. The app will then guide you through how the feature works and will…
