An upcoming update to the Google app on Android is set to introduce a much-anticipated Google app incognito search mode, finally giving Android users a privacy feature that has been available on iOS for years.
Instead of the familiar “Incognito” branding, Google is testing a toggle called “History Off Search,” according to an Android Authority report. When you type a query in the Google app, this toggle appears above the keyboard. This makes it easier to tap before hitting search.
With the toggle on, your searches do not save to your history, offering true private search within the Google app. The results open in a Chrome Custom Tab in incognito mode. So, you continue browsing privately as you click through links or open them in Chrome itself.
While the feature is not live yet, it has already appeared in recent beta versions (such as Google app v16.42.61.sa.arm64), indicating a public rollout is imminent.
Benefits and Limitations
This update brings Android parity with the Google app on iOS, making private searches fast and intuitive for Android users. It prevents searches from appearing in your device history or Google account activity, shielding sensitive queries from casual snooping or shared suggestions.
However, like Chrome incognito mode, this feature does not anonymize you online. Your ISP, employer, or school can still see traffic. Also, advanced fingerprinting techniques are not blocked. As Google previously explained when making incognito mode easier to access, the feature primarily prevents local history storage rather than complete online anonymity.
Why It Matters
The launch follows significant privacy scrutiny after high-profile legal cases involving Google’s tracking of private browsing. Now, Google aims for transparency and more user control. They’re making privacy features easier to access rather than burying them in menus or separate apps.
This approach mirrors Google’s broader push toward Android privacy features, giving users more control over their data without requiring technical expertise. The Google app incognito mode represents another step in empowering users to choose when and how their activity is tracked.
