The NYOTA Project is designed to create employment, enhance income generation, and promote savings among Kenya’s youth population.
The Kenyan government has reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, and job creation through a series of initiatives aimed at fostering economic opportunities and digital skills development.
On January 20, 2026, President H.E. Dr. William Ruto and Deputy President H.E. Prof. Kithure Kindiki officially launched the NYOTA Project, providing KSh 258.4 million in business capital support to 10,337 young entrepreneurs from Nairobi, Kiambu, and Kajiado Counties. The launch took place at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, with Cabinet Secretaries, Governors, Principal Secretaries, and other key stakeholders in attendance.
The NYOTA Project is designed to create employment, enhance income generation, and promote savings among Kenya’s youth population. Alongside financial support, the government has rolled out several digital programs for entrepreneurship and job creation, including initiatives in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector, which has already created over 300,000 jobs.
In a bid to strengthen the digital economy, the government has facilitated the assembly of five million smartphones locally, priced between KSh 6,000 and KSh 8,000, and established 350 digital hubs in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. A total of 1,450 digital hubs are planned to be established across wards nationwide to bridge the digital divide, enhance skills, and drive innovation.
Furthermore, the government is rolling out 100,000 kilometres of high-speed fibre optic infrastructure across the country, enabling improved connectivity and access to digital services.
Cabinet Secretaries present at the event included H.E. Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives & MSMEs), H.E. Salim Mvurya (Youth Affairs, Creative Economy & Sports), Dr. Alfred Mutua (Labour & Social Protection), and Dr. Deborah Barasa (Environment, Climate Change & Forestry), alongside Governors H.E. Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi), H.E. Joseph Ole Lenku (Kajiado), and H.E. Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga).
The launch highlights Kenya’s ongoing efforts to empower youth, expand digital skills, and accelerate economic growth through entrepreneurship, technology, and innovation.
