The success of social media platforms like TikTok and its focus on vertical short-form content is rather impressive, and as a result we’ve seen other competitors like YouTube and Instagram attempt to capture that same audience with their own take on short-form videos. That being said, Disney is looking to somewhat get in on the action, following the launch of Disney+ Verts.
Launching this week for subscribers in the United States, Verts will be available via the Disney+ app, and although it will feature seconds-long vertical video, it doesn’t entirely work the same way as social media platforms do, instead serving more of a means for viewers to discover newer shows and movies. According to an official press release from the Walt Disney Company:
Beginning this week, Disney+ subscribers in the U.S. can find a new place on their mobile app to discover stories with Verts, marking the first phase of bringing vertical video content to the platform. This new dynamic feed on Disney+ helps users quickly find their next favorite watch and is just the start of what will be an ongoing evolution of Verts.
Users can easily tap the Verts icon within the Disney+ app’s navigation bar to access the main video feed, which will be populated by scenes from different movies and shows that are available on the platform. Users can then add a specific show to their watchlist or return to their ongoing stream. Disney says that Verts uses an “advanced algorithm that powers the recommendation engine” for users.
The company adds that it’s planning to bring more features to Verts in the future.
