The initiative is part of South Africa’s broader digital transformation strategy aimed at improving service delivery efficiency and modernising access to public services.
Leon Schreiber, Minister of Home Affairs for the Republic of South Africa, has announced the rollout of the first phase of the government’s digital partnership model with First National Bank (FNB), marking a major expansion of in-branch public service delivery.
According to the update, 110 bank branches across South Africa are now operational under the initiative just three weeks after launch, with more than 25,000 identity document applications already processed. The expansion represents a 44% increase in access to Home Affairs services within 21 days.
The programme integrates government services into banking infrastructure, allowing citizens to access key Home Affairs functions closer to where they live and work, reducing the need for long queues at traditional government offices.
Future phases of the rollout will include first-time Smart ID applications, passport applications, and courier delivery services for both IDs and passports. The system will also be extended to digital banking platforms, enabling users to submit applications directly through mobile banking apps.
The initiative is part of South Africa’s broader digital transformation strategy aimed at improving service delivery efficiency and modernising access to public services. By embedding government services within financial institutions, the programme seeks to improve convenience, reduce processing delays, and expand nationwide accessibility.
