This week at the Nvidia GTC 2026 conference, a free-roaming robotic Olaf waddled onto the stage alongside CEO Jensen Huang. As a mom, I couldn’t help but geek out a little—my kids would have loved this droid-like iteration of one of their favorite Disney characters.
He’s adorable, he’s sparkly, and he’s heading to Disneyland Paris on March 29. But don’t let that carrot nose fool you: he isn’t just another theme park puppet. Robotic Olaf is actually a pretty big shift in how theme parks build characters—and he might just be the beginning of the end for scripted entertainment.
The Robot Snowman Who “Learned” to Walk

For decades, Disney’s animatronics were basically high-end music boxes. They followed a rigid, pre-programmed script. If you moved a rock in front of them, they’d trip; if the ground was uneven, they’d fall.
This robotic snowman is different. He wasn’t just programmed, but taught.
Using the new Newton Physics Engine—an open-source collaboration between Disney Research, Nvidia, and Google DeepMind—Imagineers trained Olaf in a digital “Omniverse.” Inside a GPU-accelerated simulator called Kamino, Olaf ran through millions of iterations of walking, balancing, and stumbling in a fraction of the time it would take a human child to learn.
When you see him shuffle across a stage, he’s not following a recorded loop. His neural network is making real-time adjustments to gravity and friction, and that’s impressive.
The End of the Script?
The most provocative part of this tech isn’t the walking—it’s the personality. Disney used training data from actual animators to teach the AI to be clumsy. This raises a question for the future of entertainment: If a robot can learn to move like a character, can it be taught to react to an audience in real time?
Currently, Olaf’s voice and high-level interactions are still overseen by human operators. But the infrastructure is now in place for Agentic Entertainment. We are moving toward a world where a character doesn’t just recite a line to a crowd, but notices a child’s Elsa shirt and decides, autonomously, to comment on it.
Why the “Open Source” Move Matters
Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Disney—the world’s most protective brand—is helping lead an open-source charge with the Newton engine. By sharing this “Physical AI” framework with the world, they may be signaling that the future of robotics isn’t in secret hardware, but in a shared language of movement.
In essence, Disney and Nvidia are building a “character OS” that could eventually power everything from hospital service bots to elder-care assistants. If a robot can learn to be “huggable” and “emotive” in a chaotic theme park, it can certainly handle a busy grocery store or restaurant service. A future full of robot helpers might be closer than we think.
The Bottom Line
Olaf might very well be a “Moonwalk” moment for robotics, if it crosses the bridge from robots that perform at us to characters that exist with us. The magic used to be in the “how did they make that?” Now, the magic is in the “what will it do next?”
