The engagement underscores ongoing cooperation between the regulator and industry players to strengthen Malawi’s telecommunications ecosystem and advance digital inclusion nationwide.
Malawi’s pioneering mobile operator, TNM plc, has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to national development and digital transformation during a visit to the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA). The company’s leadership shared its growth plans and investment strategy aimed at expanding access to advanced technologies across the country.
TNM’s Chief Executive Officer, Michel Hebert, highlighted the operator’s role in introducing successive generations of mobile technology in Malawi, including 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G and mobile money services. The company said its focus remains on ensuring connectivity and digital services are accessible to citizens in all parts of the country, supporting broader socio-economic development.
MACRA Acting Director General Mayamiko Nkoloma expressed the regulator’s support for TNM’s expansion efforts. This includes engaging the central bank on issues related to foreign exchange access to support infrastructure investment. He also urged the operator to enhance communication with customers regarding network-related issues that may affect service quality.
The regulator further called for stronger industry collaboration to tackle mobile money fraud, a growing concern in the sector. MACRA invited TNM to partner in implementing the Universal Service Fund’s Connect-a-School Project, which aims to expand digital access and connectivity in schools across Malawi.
The engagement underscores ongoing cooperation between the regulator and industry players to strengthen Malawi’s telecommunications ecosystem and advance digital inclusion nationwide.
