The USF reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Malawi’s Broadband Mapping and Digital Literacy Programme, which focuses on empowering communities, fostering collaboration, and accelerating progress toward a digitally inclusive society.
The Universal Service Fund (USF) Malawi has joined stakeholders from across the continent at the Africa Broadband Mapping National Event, taking place from 7 to 9 October 2025 at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe. The event forms part of the broader Africa Broadband Mapping Project, co-led by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and funded by the European Union (EU).
The project brings together 11 Sub-Saharan African countries, including Malawi, with the shared goal of strengthening broadband mapping systems, identifying connectivity gaps, harmonizing standards, and driving inclusive digital transformation across the region.
During the opening session, Ronald Tembo, Head of the Universal Service Fund, highlighted Malawi’s continued efforts to bridge the digital divide through strategic broadband expansion, digital skills training, and the promotion of affordable ICT services. He emphasized that broadband mapping plays a vital role in these efforts, providing the data and insights needed to guide targeted investments and ensure equitable access to digital services for all communities.
Echoing this vision, Nicholas Kanyenda, Deputy Director of Technologies and Standards, underscored the importance of accurate broadband mapping in assessing coverage disparities and improving service quality. He noted that such data-driven approaches help inform effective policy decisions that support Malawi’s broader digital inclusion agenda.
