WhatsApp is preparing to launch a username reservations system that lets users secure their preferred handles before the feature officially rolls out. According to reports from WABetaInfo, this marks a major shift from the app’s phone number-based identity system.
The new system works similarly to platforms like Telegram and Instagram, where usernames serve as personalized handles that enable communication while protecting phone numbers. Users can share a username instead of their actual number, enhancing privacy and preventing unsolicited contacts. However, WhatsApp username reservations come with rules you need to know about.

An early reservation feature will appear under WhatsApp’s profile tab where users can pre-claim usernames before the official launch. This ensures fairness and prevents popular usernames from being snatched by early adopters only. Reserved usernames link exclusively to user accounts, and each username must be unique across the entire platform.
Username Rules and Formatting Guidelines
WhatsApp enforces specific formatting rules to maintain clarity and prevent confusion. Usernames must contain at least one letter and can only use lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), periods (.), and underscores (_). Additionally, usernames cannot start with “www.” or end with domain-like suffixes such as “.com” or “.net.” They also cannot start or end with a period, and must be between 3 and 30 characters long.
Extra Privacy Layer with Username Key
WhatsApp is testing a four-digit “username key” that acts as an additional privacy layer, similar to the PIN system previously reported. To message a user, senders must know both the username and the corresponding key. This prevents spam, impersonation, and unauthorized contact attempts, giving users even more control over who can reach them.
The username reservation system is currently in beta testing and will roll out gradually, starting with select beta users before expanding globally later in 2025.
