After a long wait, Samsung began rolling out One UI 8.5 to eligible Galaxy devices in early May, and since then, the update has expanded to several Galaxy models. However, some Galaxy devices are now reportedly expected to miss out on the One UI 8.5 update, despite earlier expectations that they would receive it.
According to a report from Sammobile, Samsung may skip the One UI 8.5 update for certain older Galaxy devices from 2022 that already received One UI 8. In previous years, devices that received a major One UI update would typically also receive the subsequent mid-cycle update. However, that may no longer be the case, at least with One UI 8.5.
Here is the list of Galaxy devices that may not receive the One UI 8.5 update:
- Galaxy S22/S22+/S22 Ultra
- Galaxy S21 FE
- Galaxy A73
- Galaxy A53
- Galaxy A33
- Galaxy Z Fold 4
- Galaxy Z Flip 4
- Galaxy Tab S8/S8+/S8 Ultra
- Some other devices from 2022
Samsung did begin internal testing of One UI 8.5 for the Galaxy S22 series, but it appears that development may have been halted, as no new test builds have been spotted since early April. The same situation reportedly applies to several other Galaxy devices released in 2022.
While Samsung has technically fulfilled its promised number of Android OS upgrades for these devices, many users may feel that the company should have also delivered the One UI 8.5 update, as it includes several important improvements, refinements, and useful new features.
One possible reason for skipping One UI 8.5 on these older devices is that the update is based on Android 16 QPR2, whereas One UI 8.0 was built on the initial Android 16 release. QPR2 introduces a number of underlying code changes, updated APIs, and platform-level modifications. These can create optimization challenges, which is why Samsung may have decided not to bring One UI 8.5 to some of its older devices.
