This year, Motorola’s software update policy has become increasingly difficult to keep track of.
Take the recently announced Edge 70 Max as an example. The product pages on Motorola’s UK, German and Indian websites all promise “up to 3 Android OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates”. However, scroll down to the footnotes on those same pages and you will see the product “includes 2 OS upgrades and 3 years of security updates.”
Motorola Edge 70 Max: UK website showing conflicting software update info
The contradiction has understandably confused potential buyers and already prompted criticism from media outlets such as PhoneArena and Android Authority. We won’t be as quick to point our finger towards poor software support because lately, it seems Motorola just can’t decide what it’s committing to.
Motorola Edge 70 Max: Indian website showing conflicting software update info too
Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated case. We’ve previously encountered similar inconsistencies with the Razr 70, Razr 70 Ultra and Edge 70 Pro (Edge 70 Pro+ in India), where Motorola’s regional websites, support pages and even EPREL listings either disagreed with one another or failed to provide complete information.
Our attempts to clarify the update commitments through Motorola’s usual PR channels usually hit a brick wall, suggesting the communication issues extend beyond the public-facing websites, and there is no clear information internally either.
It seems Motorola has issues supporting this information reliably across platforms, and extra effort is needed in this direction. It’s either that or it suits them better to keep conflicting information online to avoid a solid commitment in either direction. But we are willing to give them the benefit of the doubt here and hope their publication team just needs to get a better grip on the situation.
Motorola Edge 70 Max: EU EPREL Energy Label listing shows an entirely different update period
Whatever the underlying cause, Motorola can’t afford the negative publicity and needs to double down on presenting clear and consistent software support information across all of its official channels.
Software update commitments have become one of the most important purchasing factors for smartphone buyers, and contradictory messaging only undermines consumer confidence. The confusion surrounding the Edge 70 Max shows that customers are paying close attention, making consistency more important than ever.
