Gabon has taken a step toward strengthening its digital sovereignty with the launch of a National Seminar on the Challenges of Satellite, bringing together key institutional, technical, and security stakeholders to define the role of space technologies in the country’s digital transformation.
The seminar was opened by Mark-Alexandre Doumba, Gabon’s Minister of Digital Economy, Digitalization and Innovation, who highlighted the strategic importance of satellite technologies in building a modern and resilient digital ecosystem.
According to the ministry, the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to positioning satellite technology as a key driver of digital sovereignty, resilient critical infrastructure, and economic development. The discussions focused on integrating satellite communications alongside existing digital infrastructure, including fibre-optic networks, data centres, cybersecurity systems, and digital platforms.
During the seminar, participants emphasized the need to develop a national vision for space communications to address connectivity challenges, strengthen data security, support territorial planning, and ensure the continuity of public services across the country.
The meeting also produced several strategic recommendations aimed at accelerating Gabon’s adoption of space technologies. These include strengthening governance of the national space sector, expanding satellite infrastructure to complement terrestrial networks, developing local expertise in space technologies, enhancing the protection of critical infrastructure, and establishing an integrated national strategy for satellite and space technologies.
The ministry said these priorities are intended to position Gabon within the emerging global space economy while leveraging satellite technologies to accelerate digital transformation for citizens, businesses, and government institutions.
The seminar brought together representatives from AGEOS, ANINF, ARCEP, SPIN, relevant government ministries, the Defence and Security Forces, and other partners. According to the ministry, the broad participation underscores the country’s commitment to building digital sovereignty through coordinated governance, resilient infrastructure, and a long-term strategic roadmap for implementing satellite-enabled digital initiatives.
