Spotify recently unveiled that it’s rolling out a new feature for its Premium Family plan members, which is designed to give parents more control over their children’s listening experience. Dubbed “Managed accounts,” the new feature will roll out for several countries including the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Germany, France, and the Netherlands.
The feature is meant for younger listeners aged below 13, and introduces several controls that will allow parents to curate content and restrict certain aspects of the app. Premium Family account holders will now be able to filter out explicit content, ban specific songs, albums, or artists, and even hide the short videos that sometimes play alongside tracks. Spotify is also removing its messaging feature from kids’ accounts.
With that said though, it should be noted that kids using Managed accounts will still have the freedom to curate their own playlists and collections, and their app use will continue to be personalized as per Spotify’s content algorithm, which will continue to suggest content separate from a parent’s suggested music or artists on the app.
