Remember checking your wrist only to realize you still need to grab your phone to actually respond to that WhatsApp message? Those days are over. WhatsApp has officially launched a dedicated app for the Apple Watch, marking the first time users can manage many WhatsApp features directly from their wrist without needing to pull out their iPhone.
The new app supports features that go beyond just responding to notifications. You can receive call notifications and see who’s calling, read full WhatsApp messages (even long ones) directly on their smartwatch screen, and send and record voice messages. Additionally, you can react to messages with emoji, view clearer images and stickers, and browse more of your chat history while reading messages.
What You Need to Use It
The app requires an Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 10 or newer. It must be paired with an iPhone running the latest WhatsApp version. WhatsApp emphasizes that all messages and calls remain protected with end-to-end encryption on the Apple Watch, maintaining the same security standards as the iPhone app.
This release follows WhatsApp’s earlier expansion to the iPad and aims to improve cross-device usability. The timing is interesting considering Wear OS users have had WhatsApp functionality on their smartwatches since 2023, making Apple Watch owners wait significantly longer for official support.
WhatsApp promises to add more features in future updates to enhance the Apple Watch experience. For now, the app brings much closer parity to the iPhone experience on the smaller screen, making it easier to use WhatsApp on the go while keeping your phone in your pocket or bag.
