Eng. Mwale will serve as Secretary General for the 2027–2031 institutional cycle, officially assuming office on 1 January 2027, in line with the four-year term stipulated in the ATU Constitution.
Member States of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU ) have elected Eng. Kezias Kazuba Mwale as the organisation’s next Secretary General during the 7th Ordinary Session of the ATU Conference of Plenipotentiaries (CPL-2026), held in Abuja, Nigeria.
Eng. Mwale will lead the continental telecommunications body for the 2027–2031 institutional cycle, officially assuming office on 1 January 2027 for the four-year term established under the ATU Constitution.
The election marks a new chapter for the Union as Africa continues to accelerate digital transformation, expand connectivity, and strengthen regional cooperation on telecommunications and digital policy.
In a statement announcing the outcome, the ATU congratulated the Secretary General-elect and thanked all candidates and the Member States that nominated them for their participation in the Union’s electoral process.
Current Secretary General John Omo will remain in office until the end of his mandate, continuing to lead the General Secretariat and oversee the implementation of the Union’s programme of work. He will also support the transition process and administrative preparations ahead of Eng. Mwale’s assumption of office.
The Union expressed its appreciation for Mr. Omo’s leadership and service, emphasising its commitment to a seamless transition that preserves institutional continuity while advancing ATU’s mandate to promote telecommunications and digital development across Africa.
The announcement comes as African policymakers, regulators and industry leaders gather in Abuja for CPL-2026 to shape the future direction of the continent’s telecommunications sector. The conference has focused on strengthening regional collaboration, advancing meaningful connectivity, modernising regulatory frameworks, and accelerating Africa’s digital transformation agenda.
