Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max and the iPhone 17e are on sale this week. Meanwhile, Nothing’s newly unveiled Phone (4b) is now up for pre-order. Rounding out this week’s deals are a couple of Google’s Pixel phones, Xiaomi’s 17 series, and the Samsung Galaxy A57. The Nothing Phone (4b) marks the UK brand’s first “b” series phone. While there are no launch discounts on offer, the handset is now available for pre-order, with deliveries scheduled to begin on July 16. Nothing’s Phone (4a) and last year’s flagship Phone (3) are both available at discounted prices. The Phone (4a)…
A number of companies, betting on various architectural approaches, are trying to build the first commercially viable quantum computer capable of significantly outperforming current systems. Oratomic, which entered the race earlier this year with the goal of developing the first utility-scale quantum computer by the end of the decade, said this week that it has raised $300 million. The massive Series A round was co-led by ARCH Venture Partners, Spark Capital, and Khosla Ventures, with participation from Bezos Expeditions, Index Ventures, General Catalyst, Lowercarbon Capital, Bain Capital, and others. Founded by Caltech physicists, Oratomic uses lasers, which act as optical…
When Lydia Peabody saw her friend pull out a flip phone at a party last year, she burst out laughing. “I was like, ‘Girl, what are you doing with that thing? That has to be a joke!’” Peabody told TechCrunch. But it wasn’t just a prop — her friend was participating in Month Offline, a community challenge in which a small cohort of people exchange their smartphones for flip phones. Peabody couldn’t fathom giving up her smartphone, but her friend inspired her. A year later, her life looks different. She left her career as a licensed therapist to become the…
Welcome to your week’s recap. Nothing dropped the Phone (4b) – cheaper, yet retaining Nothing’s core specs – a Glyph Bar (but simplified), a big 6.77-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, a 5,200mAh battery, and a 50MP stabilized main camera. The phone starts at €329 and it’s on pre-order. The vivo V80 series is reportedly launching next month with larger 7,200mAh batteries, Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 for the standard V80, ZEISS-branded cameras, and 90W charging. Pricing is expected to stay in line with the current V70 lineup. A fresh leak detailed the entire Pixel 11 lineup’s European pricing, with all models expected…
Scientists have successfully shown a quantum computer can improve the accuracy and reach of generative artificial intelligence drug discovery models. And they did it using their spare time and money leftover from other projects. The Technical University of Denmark team ran their generative AI model for predicting proteins in conjunction with a printer-sized quantum computer built by British startup ORCA Computing, which sped up AI by linking quantum machines with traditional processors. The researchers used the hybrid technique to generate novel peptides—short chains of amino acids—capable of binding to specific proteins in the body. Doing so is a crucial step in…
Disney+ is considering making some of its streaming library available to watch for free, according to a report from Business Insider. Disney’s chief product and technology officer Adam Smith discussed the possibility of offering free-tier content during a town hall on Thursday, the report says. It’s unknown which shows or movies would be included or when the streaming platform would consider launching the offering. The rollout of free content would allow Disney+ to better compete with free services like YouTube and Tubi, which are capturing a growing share of consumers’ viewing time. As streaming giants continue to raise prices, consumers…

China’s state-owned space company successfully launched a Long March orbital rocket and landed the booster on a seagoing recovery vessel, making it the second country to achieve the feat. The demonstration on Friday shows that China’s Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) is poised to match the advance that catapulted SpaceX to the top of the heap: reusing the same booster again and again to drive down the cost of launching spacecraft. CASC said it would attempt to reuse the booster, which can carry about as much payload as SpaceX’s workhorse Falcon 9, by the end of the year. Instead…
Nothing is narrowing its scope – in January, it announced that it won’t release a flagship in 2026 and last month it canceled the CMF Phone 3 Pro. This only leaves the (4a) phones and now a (4b) model too, a new mid-ranger that was announced earlier this week. The Nothing Phone (4b) is a bit cheaper than the Nothing Phone (4a) but not as cheap as the Nothing Phone (3a) Lite (is the (4a) Lite canceled too?). Here is a quick price comparison for 8/128GB units. Note that there is an 8/256GB configuration of the (4b) available exclusively in…
