Uber founder Travis Kalanick has a new company called Atoms focused on robotics that, according to its website, will operate in the food, mining, and transportation industries. Kalanick is rolling his existing ghost kitchen company, CloudKitchens, into Atoms. It’s not immediately clear how he plans to tackle mining and transportation. Atoms’ website says it will build a “wheelbase for robots,” and Kalanick said in a live interview with TBPN on Friday that his company will apply this wheelbase to “specialized robots” — not humanoids. “Humanoids have their place, but there’s a lot of room for specialized robots that do things…
Despite branching into the lower and higher-end segments, Nothing is still primarily a mid-ranger company. The fourth generation started shipping this week with the vanilla model, though the Pro is only now starting its pre-order phase. The Nothing Phone (4a) closes the all-important camera gap with a 50MP 3.5x/80mm telephoto module. In fact, its camera is almost identical to that of the (4a) Pro – last year, the superior camera hardware was a major reason to pay the Pro premium. Nothing Phone (4a) in Black, White, Blue and Pink This year, the two models differ…
You can chart a year through product launches, or you can measure it in the greater moments that change the way we look at AI. The AI industry is constantly churning out news, like major acquisitions, indie developer successes, public outcry against sketchy products, and existentially dangerous contract negotiations — it’s a lot to untangle, so we’re taking a glimpse at where we’re at and where we’ve been so far this year. Anthropic vs. the Pentagon Once business partners, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reached a bitter stalemate in February as they renegotiated the contracts that…
Yesterday we saw the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra subjected to a teardown on video, and today the same JerryRigEverything channel is back with its now-traditional ‘durability test’. This shows how scratchy the glass is, what happens to the screen if direct fire is applied to it, and, of course, whether a phone bends. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G So if you’re interested in finding out how the Galaxy S26 Ultra fares in all those areas, and some bonus ones, grab something to eat and/or drink, take a seat in a comfortable chair, and hit Play below. In case you couldn’t…
Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg spoke out against the use of AI technology when used in creative endeavors in an interview at the SXSW conference in Austin on Friday. Asked how he viewed AI’s utility as part of the filmmaking process, Spielberg said, “I’ve never used AI on any of my films yet,” to which the audience erupted with cheers and applause. The director/producer/screenwriter, who became a household name for blockbusters like “Jaws,” “E.T.,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” and many others, is not anti-technology, necessarily. His own films have imagined worlds filled with technology,…
In last week’s poll about the Apple iPhone 17e, some 30% of voters say that they are not looking to buy an iPhone. Another 30% say they are looking for a new iPhone but are aiming for a more premium model. The 17e does have its fans, but it is a niche device – let’s break it down. Only 10% of voters are ready to buy a 17e outright and around half of that would join them if they like what they see in reviews. Speaking of, we have a review unit at the office and already posted an unboxing…
After widespread complaints that Facebook has become an “AI slop hellscape,” Meta on Friday announced new tools to detect impersonation, as well as updated creator guidelines that better define what Facebook considers to be “original content.” Last year, the company announced a crackdown on spammy and unoriginal content — things like repeatedly reusing someone else’s photos, videos, or text. The goal: elevate original creator content in its feeds and push back against the AI-generated slop and other low-quality posts that had been dragging down Facebook’s reputation. This is key to Facebook’s continued success as a creator platform. Simply put, if…
Judging by Google Chrome’s massive usage figures (3.83 billion worldwide monthly active users and 68-69% share on mobile, 89% on Android), chances are you are using the browser in any form. The Samsung Browser (formerly known as the Samsung Internet Browser) is one of the more popular alternatives. It comes pre-installed on all Galaxy devices and can also be freely downloaded by anyone else from the Google Play Store. It is very powerful, with plenty of customization and some interesting extra features like extension support. According to reports, Samsung Browser will be getting a multi-window, split-screen browsing experience soon. It…
AI agents are expected to soon start making autonomous purchasing and scheduling decisions on behalf of humans. But Michael Fanous, a UC Berkeley computer science graduate and former machine learning engineer at CareRev, argues that these agents are currently missing a critical piece of the puzzle: the full context required to truly understand the people they are programmed to serve. Fanous claims that machines currently struggle to discern whether a person’s professional profile on LinkedIn, their activity on Instagram, and their public government records all belong to the same human being. To solve this, he teamed up with his father,…
