For years, using Meta’s apps has meant one thing: they’re free, and Meta sells your attention to advertisers. That arrangement isn’t going away. But Meta just added a new option on top of it.
On Wednesday, Meta head of product Naomi Gleit announced the global rollout of the Meta Plus subscription plans. Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus are both $3.99 per month. WhatsApp Plus is $2.99 per month.
What You’re Actually Paying For
The features vary by app. Instagram Plus is the most loaded. Subscribers get story rewatch insights, unlimited audience lists beyond Close Friends, and extended story duration past 24 hours. There’s also anonymous story previews, animated reactions, custom profile fonts, and the ability to post without appearing in followers’ feeds. Facebook Plus mirrors most of those tools.
WhatsApp Plus is more focused on personalization. Subscribers get custom app themes, new ringtones, premium sticker packs, and additional pinned chats. It’s closer in spirit to something like Telegram Premium than a full feature unlock.
Worth noting: these plans don’t replace Meta Verified. Verification and impersonation protection are still handled separately. The Meta Plus subscription is a separate product aimed at regular users who want more day-to-day functionality.
Meta is also testing a broader framework called Meta One for creators, businesses, and Meta AI power users. Two AI-focused tiers are in the works at $7.99 and $19.99 per month. Those plans target users who want higher compute limits, deeper reasoning, and more image and video generation each month.
Meta had been building toward a paid tier for a while. This Meta Plus subscription global rollout is the payoff. Whether the social and cosmetic features justify $3.99 is going to depend on how much time you actually spend in these apps. For most people, probably not.
