WhatsApp just made chatting with friends around the world a whole lot easier. The messaging app is rolling out a built-in message translation feature that works right inside your chats. No more copying text and switching to Google Translate. Just long-press any message, tap “Translate,” and boom. You’re reading it in your preferred language. The feature works on both Android and iPhone, but Android users get a sweet bonus: automatic translation for entire chat threads.
The WhatsApp message translation feature handles everything on your device to protect privacy. Unlike Telegram, which sends your messages to Google servers for translation, WhatsApp keeps your chats encrypted and private throughout the process. Your phone downloads the necessary language packs, so nothing leaves your device.
But here’s something you should take note of: Android users only get six languages at launch (English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic). iPhone users get access to 19+ languages from day one. That’s because iPhone users can tap into Apple’s built-in Translate app languages. WhatsApp promises more Android languages are coming soon.
Android users also get exclusive automatic translation for whole conversations. Turn it on once, and every incoming message gets translated without you lifting a finger. iPhone users have to translate messages one by one.
This joins WhatsApp’s growing list of AI-powered features like message summaries and writing assistance. The translation feature is rolling out gradually, so keep your app updated to get access as soon as it hits your device. For global communication without privacy compromises, WhatsApp message translation looks like a solid upgrade over existing privacy features.
