X’s rebuilt Android app is officially out. The company spent close to a year building it from scratch, and it’s live now on the Google Play Store.
X head of product Nikita Bier announced the release on Monday, calling it one of the largest engineering projects in the company’s history. According to Bier, X’s rebuilt Android app was built from the ground up rather than patched or updated in place. The goal was faster loading, smoother scrolling, and notifications that actually behave. “It’s faster, smoother and more reliable,” Bier wrote. He added that the new codebase should let X ship new features much quicker than before.

That last part might matter more than the speed boost. Bier said going forward, many new features will hit Android first. That’s a real reversal. For years, Android users watched new X tools land on iPhone months ahead of their own phones, and app store reviews were basically a running list of Android’s crashes and half-broken menus.
Why X Rebuilt the App From Scratch
X started assembling a dedicated Android team last August after what Bier described as one of the platform’s biggest weeks ever for Android downloads. That surge apparently made the case internally that Android deserved real investment instead of leftover engineering time.
The rebuild also lands right after X spun messaging and payments into their own separate apps. X Chat launched as a standalone app in November, bringing encrypted messages and disappearing texts to a unified inbox. X Money, the platform’s payments push, has been rolling out to a limited group of users through invites. All three pieces, the core app, Chat, and Money, are now being built and shipped on their own separate timelines.
