The results from last week’s poll have us wondering – do people really love the Sony Xperia 1 VIII so much or do they love phones with 3.5mm headphone jacks and microSD slots and the Xperia happens to be the only flagship to have those features? Because the results are quite positive – nearly a quarter of voters are willing to spend €1,500/£1,400 to get the Mark 8 and that is if they pick up the base 12/256GB unit. The 512GB and 1TB models cost more (€2,000/£1,850 in the case of the 1TB version). Interestingly, the positive vote could have…
SpaceX has launched the upgraded third version of its Starship rocket for the first time, though the test launch did not go perfectly for Elon Musk’s spaceflight company. The 407-foot rocket — the most powerful ever built — lifted off from SpaceX’s company town Starbase, Texas, at 5:30 p.m. local time. Just a few minutes later, the upper stage ship separated from the Super Heavy booster and continued on into space. The booster pitched away from the Starship vehicle and headed back to Earth, where it was supposed to perform a simulated landing in the Gulf of Mexico. But the…
This week the theme is “freebies” as several manufacturers pair phones with additional gadgets to try and draw in a crowd. We start with the OnePlus 15R, which comes with a free OnePlus Watch 3 43mm. And this is in addition to a €150 discount from its launch price. Next up, the Sony Xperia 1 VIII is on pre-order until June 19 – yeah, it will be a while. And there’s no discount either, the Mark 8 really does cost €1,500 for a 12/256GB phone. At least you get a pair of the excellent Sony WH-1000XM6 for free.…
One news headline this week had a whiff of déjà vu about it. Nuclear startup Deep Fission announced that it was going public, hoping to garner investor support to build subterranean reactors to power AI data centers. Wait, didn’t I already write that story? I could have sworn that I did. Oh right, I did. Last September, Deep Fission said that it had gone public via a reverse merger with Surfside Acquisition, a Delaware shell company, a transaction in which a private company acquires an existing publicly listed entity to gain a stock market listing — raising $30 million in…
If you are in the market for a mid-range smartphone, it’s almost impossible not to stumble upon Samsung’s Galaxy A lineup. But with the recent Samsung Galaxy A57 release, one would wonder whether the Samsung Galaxy A56 isn’t actually a more sensible solution, seeing the somewhat modest hardware upgrade. After all, last year’s Galaxy A56 is still relevant and sells at a lower price. Since the more recent Galaxy offers only minor design changes and a newer chipset, it’s probably safe to assume that the Galaxy A56 will get you a lot of the way while saving you a few…
SolarSquare, an Indian rooftop solar startup that helps households and housing societies adopt solar power, is in advanced talks to raise fresh capital after securing India’s largest solar venture investment in December 2024, TechCrunch has learned. B Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners are set to co-lead the Series C round, which could value SolarSquare at between $450 million and $500 million and bring in $55 million to $60 million in new investment, according to multiple people familiar with the matter. That would represent more than a doubling of SolarSquare’s valuation in roughly 18 months — a sign of how rapidly…
WIREDThe meeting ends at 6. Your MacBook died at 4.Picture it. You’re in the third city this week, back-to-back calls, a deck to finish before dinner, and somewhere between the airport lounge and the hotel lobby, your laptop gave up before you did. You had the faster machine. The more expensive one. The one with the chip that benchmarks reviewers drool over. None of that mattered when the battery icon turned red at 38,000 feet with two hours still on the clock. This is not a fringe scenario. For most business buyers, this is Tuesday. The MacBook decision has been framed as…
Apple has announced the expansion of sleep apnea notifications and hearing test features to India. Sleep apnea is a condition in which a person’s breathing momentarily stops during sleep, preventing the body from getting enough oxygen. If left untreated, it can lead to health consequences over time, including increased risk of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and cardiac issues. Apple Watch helps its users detect signs of sleep apnea. It’s done with the help of an Apple Watch metric called Breathing Disturbances, which uses the smartwatch’s accelerometer to detect small movements at the wrist associated with interruptions to normal respiratory patterns…
Two years ago, IBM realized there was one glaring omission in its roster of sports partnerships: Formula One. Formula One has become one of the world’s most popular sports, especially in the U.S., where Netflix’s “Drive to Survive” documented the working lives of F1 drivers and turned them into mainstream celebrities. The tech-centric sport has also become a hot ticket for tech companies like AWS, Oracle, and Anthropic, which partner with teams for sponsorship visibility and to provide data analytics and AI tools that can deliver a competitive edge. So when IBM went looking for its next major sports partnership,…
