WhatsApp has been quietly collecting birth years from some users for a while now. That data used to serve one purpose only. It proved you were old enough to use the app under a handful of US state age-verification laws. Now, according to WABetaInfo, a new Android beta is testing WhatsApp Birthday Notifications, turning that same compliance data into something far more personal.
WABetaInfo spotted the feature in WhatsApp beta version 2.26.27.3. It adds a dedicated section that shows when a contact’s birthday is coming up. When the day arrives, WhatsApp sends an in-app notification instead of leaving you to remember on your own. It only works for contacts who’ve already shared their date of birth with WhatsApp. Plenty of people won’t see much at first, since not everyone has entered one yet.
WABetaInfo notes the feature isn’t live for beta testers yet. There’s also no word on when it might reach a public release.
WhatsApp hasn’t added a way to hide your birthday yet
Here’s the part worth paying attention to. At this stage, WhatsApp hasn’t built in any setting for this. There’s no way yet to keep your birthday visible for compliance purposes while hiding it from contacts. If WhatsApp Birthday Notifications launch exactly as WABetaInfo describes them, your birthday becomes visible to anyone who has you saved. That happens whether you meant for it or not.
WABetaInfo says that could still change before a wider release, since development is still early. WhatsApp has leaned into more personal touches lately. It’s been testing a green dot that shows when contacts are active, and experimenting with calendar-style reminders for one-on-one chats. Birthday notifications fit that same direction, following a format Facebook has used for years.
For now, WhatsApp Birthday Notifications remain a beta-only test, and the rollout details aren’t set yet. Would you want your birthday visible to every WhatsApp contact automatically, or would you rather choose who sees it first?
